2025 Snowy Plover Nesting Season Has Begun on Lengueta Arenosa

A recent find of an active Snowy Plover nest on Lengueta Arenosa has heralded the beginning of the 2025 nesting season!  For background regarding local Snowy Plover surveys and monitoring, and news on last year’s nesting season, see June 3, 2024 and October 23, 2024 articles

On the morning of April 11, 2025, El Berryman and John Kinabrew  (Punta Banda Conservation Alliance Steering Committee members) discovered a nest with three eggs.  That afternoon, John went back to the nest site and protected it with a wire enclosure, a temporary fence, and informational signage. On April 12, El returned to the site and confirmed the eggs were being incubated by an adult Snow Plover.

Surveys for additional nests and nest monitoring and protection will continue throughout the 2025 nesting season for these birds, and the Punta Banda Conservation Alliance will keep you posted with our newsletters. Please exercise caution in the vicinity of nests, minimizing human activity in these areas and preventing dogs from running loose. Activities around nests could lead adults to abandon their nests or even worse, eggs could be destroyed. Furthermore, the precocial (able to run around the same day of hatching) chicks will soon be present on the beaches where they are vulnerable to harassment and injury. Thank you for your interest and cooperation!
