La Alianza! Grand Debut at Gertrude Pearlman Theater

On April 2, 2024, La Alianza unveiled their newly formed organization at the Gertrude Pearlman Theater in Punta Banda. The presentation was introduced by William Anaya, founder of La Alianza, and El Berryman, conservation biologist specializing in endangered species and biodiversity conservation. William and El provided information about La Alianza and its purpose and goals. Then a series of speakers representing member organizations spoke about the work they’ve been doing on the Punta Banda peninsula.

  • Dr. Omar Clay, a local environmental physicist, followed with a presentation on Science for the People, a member organization he directs that is spearheading environmentally oriented citizen science in the local area.

  • Ivan Manriquez, director of Pro Esteros, then briefly discussed Pro Estero’s invaluable work protecting the local estuary and associated beaches.

  • Diego Maldonado, environmental scientist and restoration specialist for Fauna del Noroeste, described the projects his organization is working on, and discussed conservation needs of the Punta Banda area, with a focus on the need to control invasive plant species such as iceplant.

  • Gabriel Camacho, specialist in water quality, community engagement, and pollution clean-up, described Ciudadania Mexicana’s activities with local communities to raise awareness and facilitate activism related to current water quality problems.

  • Hiram Moreno, conservation biologist with the Universidad Autonoma de Baja California and Terra Peninsular, described his research on light-footed Ridgeway’s rail, an endangered bird that nests in the estuary. He also provided information on the amazing diversity of plants and animals on the Punta Banda peninsula.

  • See our “Member Organizations” page for more information on each of the organizations presented, and links to their websites.

The presentation concluded with questions and answers, then presenters and audience gathered in the lobby where informational tables were set up by the different organizations. The presentation was well received, with a favorable turn out and many asking how they could get involved. La Alianza is excited to provide additional informational presentations in the future as we begin engage more community members in conservation projects.
