Punta Banda Conservation Alliance Partners with Ejido Colonel Estaban Cantu to Help Conserve their Wildlife Management Area
The Punta Banda Conservation Alliance is excited to form a partnership in conservation efforts with the Ejido Esteban Cantu (Ejido). The Ejido has set aside many thousands of acres on the Punta Banda peninsula which are managed sustainably for hunting, gathering, and other activities. This large backcountry area is called an "UMA" which roughly translates to "Wildlife Management Area". The UMA "Ejido Colonel Esteban Cantu" was formed about 7 years ago. It is led by Luis Serrano with about 20 other Cantu residents assisting. Signs and locked gates limit access to prevent wildlife poaching and illegal collecting of plants. Luis and others patrol regularly to protect the natural resources on the lands. Hunting and gathering permits are sold to pay for the program and raise continuing revenue for the Ejido. The take is limited to a sustainable harvest as determined by a wildlife professional.
A heartfelt congratulations and thank you to Luis Serrano Ayala, his helpers, and all the ejiditarios of Cantu for embarking on and continuing support for this important conservation effort!
In the future there may be other opportunities for guided recreation in the UMA. Very exciting! The Punta Banda Conservation Alliance website will keep you posted.
