2024 Border BioBlitz

May 6, 2024

On Sunday, May 4, biologists and others interested in local conservation participated in the Ensenada Border BioBlitz at our beautiful estuary, in spite of the rain. The Border BioBlitz is an extensive, annual community science endeavor to record as many species as possible in the vicinity of the U.S.-Mexico border. It started in 2015 when botanist Dr. Sua Vanderplank was working to document species impacted by the border wall, and she approached Next Generation of Sonoran Desert Researchers for support in applying a community-driven approach for collecting data (Biodiversity at the Borderlands and the Great Border BioBlitz). The first BioBlitz event was in 2017, and aside from pandemic setback, the project has continued on an annual basis and the geographic scope has extended to areas further from the border in Mexico.

Participants at the local May 4 event consisted mostly of local Mexican biologists, although it was open to all. Even though it was a rainy day, these dedicated folks had an enjoyable experience exploring, contributing to science, and connecting with kindred spirits.

Future publications resulting from the regional data will be posted to the ACPB website.
