Western Snowy Plover Nest Monitoring and Protection

This ongoing citizen science project involves the careful search for and recording of western snowy plover nests on the developed part of the beach of Lengueta Arenosa by trained volunteers. This takes place during the snowy plover nesting season in spring and summer. Located nests are physically protected and monitored approximately weekly through the seven week period until the chicks fledge. Beach signs at the nest sites and the protection of the nest sites as well as widely shared monthly nesting updates keep the wider community educated, aware, and focused on the needs and protection of this endangered shorebird.
