Western Snowy Plover Chicks on Baja Cove Beach

May 7, 2024

We live in a very special natural place! John Kinabrew and Amy DeBaun have been monitoring and protecting the endangered snowy plovers nesting on the Baja Cove beach. On May 6, 3 western snowy plover eggs hatched on Playa Dorado. and John and Amy found the tiny little fluffballs with their parents wandering the upper beach near their home at Baja Cove. That is 3 more out a world population of perhaps 5,000! As John, notes, in three weeks they will be able to fly but until then they are VERY VULNERABLE to our curious dogs and to vehicles.

And just noted on May 7 - they found a second nearby nest with three eggs and a parent sitting on them! So the season is upon us to be careful and on the lookout for these precious little creatures. John has been walking the upper beach carefully looking for nests multiple times per week and so far has found three in front of beach houses. One was already abandoned due to a predator attack.
Please control your dogs on the beach, respect the temporary fences around discovered nests, and contact John at johnkinabrew4@yahoo.com if you happen upon speckled eggs in the sand. John is working with local scientists to monitor and protect the Western Snowy Plover. Together we can help this threatened species survive!
